The Lost Mermaid~A Shem Creek Moonlight Jamboree
Social Theme: Diversity, Kindness, and the Danger of Judging Others by Appearance or Language

The Lost Mermaid~Return to the Raspberry Kingdom
Social Theme: Gentle Approaches to Bullies and the Importance of Teamwork and Friendship

Method
The books are recorded on a memory stick and are projected onto a large screen. The readings, which are presented by Lily the Mermaid, are interactive. Lily has a technical assistant, Captain Joe the Pirate, which is fun for the students.

Each presentation begins with an introduction and video of the sea creatures that the children will meet in the respective story. Samples of turtles, oyster shells, crabs, anemones, and mermaid purses are passed around to the children, and some biological information about each of them is provided at that time. The Endangered Species List is discussed, as one of the characters, the loggerhead turtle, is endangered. This is followed by a video of loggerhead hatchlings emerging from their eggs on the beach and waddling under the moonlight to the sea.The discussion concludes what it means to be good stewards of our planet.

Student Interaction
In the reading of The Shem Creek Moonlight Jamboree, students are involved in a musical jamboree, where they participate by shaking, rattling, and rolling instruments that have been passed out to them prior to the musical scene. The reading concludes with a discussion about the social lesson that the sea friends learned at Shem Creek, regarding the importance of kindness and the danger of judging others by appearance or language.

The Return to the Raspberry Kingdom is conducted essentially the same, but the reading interaction involves audience support: students either cheer or boo, depending on the character’s behavior. There is a final musical scene, in which students can participate with instruments, depending upon the time allotted. The reading is concluded with a brief discussion of bullying and the importance of teamwork and friendship.

Compensation
There is no charge for presentations, but order forms are distributed prior to the presentation. Preview books are sent to classroom teachers, and books are signed and personalized for students who place an order. The book normally retails for $17 and is offered to students at a reduced rate. All students receive a bookmark and a sticker at the end of each session.
